How do we determine a great website design?

What are the factors that lead to poor first impressions of your website?

What leads to Good First Impression of Your Website

  1. High Visual Complexity
  2. Low Prototypicality

Visual Complexity measures the amount of visual differences in your website such as website layout and font differences.

Prototypicality determines how representative the overall design is to your website. In short, it is the overall combination of design elements in your website that allows people to associate with your brand such as such as font consistency and color consistency .

It was investigated in an International Journal of Human-Computer Studies in 2012 (vol. 70-11) that most people perceived websites with high visual complexity and low prototypicality as highly unappealing.

That said, if your website has a cluttered complex interface with too many ux and ui design inconsistencies, perhaps it is time to relook into your website design.
